Cozumel, Mexico

Our first day trip off the boat, and we docked right on the beautiful island of Cozumel, Mexico. After much deliberation we decided to do a bit of everything so went to a place called Chankanaab. A short $12 taxi and we had the option to swim with dolphins, check out some Mayan ruins, or snorkel and relax on the beautiful white sand beaches. Of course we decided to do some tequila tasting first.. we are in Mexico after all! Bare in mind it was early in the morning, about 8am so tequila was not ideal. To our great surprise, the shots we sampled were actually delicious (unlike the petrol you get in Australia). They were all natural and used 100% blue agave. Our top picks were the coffee, almond and citrus flavours. Dad bought a bottle of the citrus, which was only about 20% alcohol – so perfect for a margarita! It came in a beautifully hand blown glass bottle.

The rest of the day was spent on the beach, snorkelling off the shoreline. The reef was right against the mainland, and we saw quite a few different species – mainly these guys though.

We also spotted an octopus!

There was also an underwater treasure hunt where you try and find the Mayan relics placed on the seabed. I found this one – not too sure what it is!

A few cans of Tecate beer, which i would compare to XXXX Gold, and some authentic nachos and we were done for the day. Cozumel was really nice, however i’m sure there are other parts of the island that may have been better. We went to the seaside.. maybe the bayside would have been more pristine. It was an awesome day however, and i could easily spend a few days around here exploring.
